Gamers have been obsessed with Apex Legends since it debuted in 2019. Now that you can squad up on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X/S, more and more people are discovering this award-winning battle royale-style game for themselves — and having an absolute blast.

Apex Legends is one of the best character-driven hero shooters on the scene — there really is something for everyone. In terms of diversity, Apex Legends is also ahead of the game. Like, way ahead — one study even found that it was the most diverse game out of the 100 they looked at.
You can choose to play as a female-presenting player, a male-presenting player, a non-binary player, someone on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, or someone non-white. This type of representation makes everyone feel seen, and it’s a huge reason so many people continue to flock to the game.
As we said, Apex Legends is a battle royale-style game, a gameplay style that combines survival and last man standing.
Each game starts with multiple players (from dozens to hundreds, depending on who’s online) being dropped on a map that’s slowly shrinking. The goal is to eliminate other players without getting caught outside the “safe zone.” The last team or person remaining is the winner.
Additionally, Apex is a first-person shooter. That means that when you’re killing noobs in-game, you see the map through your character’s “eyes.” You’re the one “holding” the gun, which adds a sense of realism and like you’re really “in” the game.
Apex also offers “seasons” and limited-time battle passes, introducing new characters, cosmetic items, maps, and weapons, when they’re released. These additions keep gameplay fresh and exciting and stop you from getting bored even if you’ve been playing since it came out.
With all that in mind, here are some games like Apex Legends that twist the narrative, perspective, or gameplay just enough to offer a different experience with many of the same elements and feel.
1. Fortnite
Even if you haven’t played it yet, Fortnite has had a grip on gaming culture since it was released in 2017.
In addition to just being a sick game, Fortnite has expanded into hosting virtual concerts (we’re looking at you, Ariana Grande), which makes for a far more immersive experience than other games offer. Fortnite also allows players to build structures, which they can use to reach new areas of gameplay, use as cover, and create traps — all to clutch out that Victory Royale.
Speaking of gameplay, like Apex Legends, Fortnite qualifies as a battle royale game — when you start a game, you’ll drop into a map (solo or with a team), and it’s game on.
One of the differences between Fortnite and Apex Legends is their perspective. While Apex is a first-person shooter, Fortnite is third-person. How is this different? Instead of being “behind” the weapon you’re brandishing, you can see your whole character running in “front” of you while you play.

Additionally, Warzone has a massive player base, so you’ll have an abundance of people to play against. Even though it’s a newer game, its name recognition and support mean it’ll likely be around for a long, long time.
5. Overwatch 2
Of all the games on the list, Overwatch 2 is likely the closest in both style and gameplay to Apex Legends. It’s a character-driven, first-person shoot-em-up involving five-on-five team gameplay and set objectives that you must complete before the other team to catch the dub.
Overwatch also operates based on seasons and battle passes, so you frequently get new and updated content to keep things interesting.

If you’re looking for a new and different theme in your battle royale video games, check out Fear the Wolves. Instead of being set in a sci-fi wonderland like many other games on this list, Fear the Wolves is set in Chernobyl’s irradiated wasteland.
To survive, you must fight your way to the extraction point. You can play solo as a lone wolf or with a team, pushing through horrific anomalies, mutants, weather-related issues, radiation, and, perhaps most of all, other players. It’s fun, unique, and definitely a blast (pun intended).
8. Super Animal Royale
Not every battle royale needs to be super violent or involve sci-fi themes. Case in point, Super Animal Royale. Instead of piloting a machine or a mech suit, you’ll get to “drive” an adorable, fuzzy animal.
But don’t get it twisted; Super Animal Royale can be just as cut-throat and competitive as any of the other games on our list. Each round starts with 64 players (cats, pandas, foxes, and more) shown from a unique, top-down perspective.
In addition to being cute, the community surrounding Super Animal Royale is super positive, so you won’t encounter nearly as much toxicity or abrasive talk as you would in a COD lobby.

9. Maelstrom
If you don’t want to fight on the ground or in the air, why not battle on the water? Maelstrom lets you take control of a sailing ship that you can use to take out everyone around you.
You’ll come up against other players, sea monsters, and other dangers in the depths, which you can tackle on your own or as a co-op. Be tactical, be quick, and customize your ship to fit whatever your murderous vibe may be. Combat on the open water has never been so fun.
