Seven Sci-Fi Games To Play If You Like Destiny 2

Looking for sci-fi games like Destiny 2 to play to get some diversity in your gameplay? Powder has seven options that you’ll love exploring.

Seven Sci-Fi Games To Play If You Like Destiny 2

Sci-fi games are everywhere these days — with the world sometimes feeling so out of control, it can be nice to have fun in a completely different environment than you currently live in, with the powers, gadgets, and technologies to save it.

Destiny 2 is a fan favorite, immersing you in a world of space-traveling humans defending themselves from Red Legion and Ghaul. If you love Destiny 2 but want to expand your horizons, we’ve got a few of our favorite games with much of the same feel.

What’s So Great About Destiny 2?

So, what makes Destiny 2 such a popular game? Developed by Bungie, Inc in 2017, Destiny 2 was the sequel to 2014’s Destiny and was a pay-to-play game for the first few years it was out.

However, since 2019, the game has been free-to-play (with optional add-on purchases, like many games).

Destiny 2 is played from a first-person shooter perspective — through all the epic moments and sick kills, it feels like you’re the one holding the gun.

If you like to feel like you’re in the game and keep a strong sense of immersion when you play, first-person shooters are just what you’re looking for. They make you feel more in control of the action and progression, allowing you to focus more on the storyline as though you were living it.

The game also qualifies as a “looter shooter,” where you do plenty of fast-paced shooting mixed with the typical grow-and-grind of a role-playing game (RPG). It’s an excellent hybrid of styles, so you can progress at your own pace and grind as little (or as much) as you want.

In addition to being a first-person looter shooter, Destiny 2 also has plenty of elements of more classic roleplaying games. As you progress, you’ll build up and develop your own sick characters (known as “Guardians”).

These Guardians have three classes — Hunter, Titan, and Warlock. Each of those classes of Guardian has its own perks, abilities, and other characteristics.

There are also nine different subclasses of skills that you can develop — from the Thundercrash-wielding Striker to the Nova Warp-using Voidwalker. For those that love customization, Destiny 2 offers plenty of it.

One of the biggest selling points of Destiny 2 is that it’s an open-world game, though. Instead of being walked down a specific path, you’re allowed far more freedom to explore the world, fight, level up, and progress at your own pace.

You can discover side quests, grind out level progression and skills, or just wander around and see what you find. Play it even once, and you’ll immediately understand how it got and remains so popular.

If you loved Destiny 2, it’s time to buckle up. Here are seven games that will scratch your Destiny itch while still providing the thrill of something new.

1. Titanfall 2

Like Destiny 2, Titanfall 2 is a powerhouse sequel. It’s also a sci-fi-based first-person shooter, putting you in the driver's (shooter’s) seat, letting you control the epic action from behind your weapon.

When you play Titanfall 2, you explore your unique bond with a Titan — a giant, mecha-style robot with specific abilities. You’re “piloting” that Titan throughout the game, but you control both yourself as the pilot as well as your robot.

The frontier of space exploration may be a scary time for the people of the world of Titanfall 2. Still, it makes for some extra exciting gameplay (especially if you’re looking for sci-fi games like Destiny 2). Give it a shot — we’re sure you won’t regret it.

2. Diablo 3

Diablo is another classic series, the first of which was released back in 1997. When Diablo 3 came out in 2012, it quickly became one of the best-selling PC games of all time — over 3.5 million copies were sold in just the first 24 hours.

While it might not technically be “sci-fi,” as it’s a war between angels and devils in a world named Sanctuary, Diablo 3 has a lot of the same vibe and plenty of action and excitement to keep you interested.

In terms of gameplay, Diablo 3 utilizes a fairly classic role-playing style — you pick a character class, spend your time leveling up and developing your abilities, and upgrade your equipment to become faster, stronger, and more lethal against the forces working against you.

If you like your games more on the dark side, Diablo 3 is an excellent foray into a world unlike any you’ve ever explored before. Plus, Diablo IV is scheduled to drop in June 2023, so now’s the time to grind through the third installment and get up to speed.

3. Halo 5

We’re sure you’ve at least heard of the Halo series — it’s been a gaming staple since it came out way back in 2001. Halo remains so popular that it’s even made its way onto the television scene with a series on Paramount+ that was just renewed for a second season. The gaming series doesn’t seem like it’s going away anytime soon, which is just fine with us.

When you’re looking for a sci-fi game like Destiny 2, the parallels between it and Halo 5 are obvious. There’s a lot of crossover between Halo 5 and Destiny 2 — even down to the studio that worked on them.

For instance, both games have similar visual designs and combat mechanics. They also feature similar campaigns that involve moving across the stars to solve mysteries of galactic proportions.

The PvP gameplay of Halo 5 will also feel familiar and comfortable as you work your way through the campaign, exploring ship-like areas and following the storyline as either Master Chief or Jameson Locke.

4. Deep Rock Galactic

If you love alien battles and sick, graphic kill shots, check out Deep Rock Galactic. It may not have been a massive release, but the game is a hidden gem that people who enjoy Destiny 2 will love.

Deep Rock Galactic has been described as a mix between Borderlands and Bioshock in its tone and message, only with mining dwarves as the protagonists. If you like your sci-fi games to tell a story and have an underlying, almost political theme, Deep Rock Galactic is the game for you.

Plus, you can play it solo or as a team, and there are some fun customization options. We know you’ll have a blast (pun intended).

If you’re a fan of indie games with cult followings, check it out — you may even consider starting your own stream to feature it!

5. Borderlands 3

Speaking of Borderlands — while they’re all incredible games in their own right, Borderlands 3 is possibly the best on the list if you’re looking for games like Destiny 2.

The game may be over-the-top in terms of theme and visuals — exploding enemies, anyone? — but it brings the heat and planet-hopping that will keep you entertained the whole way through. It’s the follow-up to Borderlands 2, picking up six years after it ended.

Borderlands 3 is all about moving through the world of Sanctuary, which is under siege, as one of four Vault Hunters — treasure-hunting mercenaries recruited by Pandora’s Crimson Raiders to harness the Vaults and fight off the bad guys (in this case, a set of twins and their cult following).

Like Destiny 2, Borderlands 3 is a first-person shooter with plenty of action, excitement, and epic moments. You can hunt down the Vaults, gather treasure, and run around as a menace.

The Borderlands series remains one of the most unhinged, character-driven game series on the market, and we can’t wait to see what else they come up with — but if you love Destiny 2, we feel confident that Borderlands (and especially Borderlands 3) will be right up your alley.

6. Lost Ark

Compared to many sci-fi games like Destiny 2 on our list, Lost Ark is one of the newer additions. Although it just came out in 2019, it’s one of the most-played games on the Steam platform. Lost Ark is at the top of the list of looter shooter-style games.

Lost Ark qualifies as an MMO or massively multiplayer online game. Instead of playing by yourself with a bunch of NPCs (non-playable characters), you’re playing with thousands of other people — which adds to the experience and keeps things interesting. In Lost Ark, you’re exploring the lore of the world of Arkesia.

There are plenty of classes of characters to choose from and then customize — warrior, martial artist, gunner, mage, assassin, and specialist. Depending on your selected class, you’ll learn a different fighting style that will continue to adapt and grow as you level your character up and move through the game.

It’s action-packed while allowing you to grow your character and interact with others who love the same gaming style.

7. Warframe

Warframe makes its way onto plenty of video game recommendations lists, and for good reason. Warframe is a third-person shooter — where you can see your character's body instead of having it feel like you’re wielding the weapon yourself — and it’s a certified banger.

With over 50 million people playing it, you’ll always have plenty of other gamers to fight against or team up with as you learn to control and evolve your own warframe (a powerful bio-metal suit) and clutch out some insane dubs.

There is also a very active Warframe community, so you have plenty of people to communicate with, get tips from, and generally share your excitement with.
