Is there anything better than being able to make money doing something you love to do? With the advent of the multiple social media platforms we use, people have found creative ways to turn their hobbies and passions into cold hard cash (metaphorically speaking, of course).
Nowadays, more and more people are able to fund their lives by spending their time doing things that genuinely make them happy and excited.
TikTok is just one of the many ways you can do that, especially if you teach yourself how to make money on TikTok like the pros do. If you’ve always dreamed of being a superstar content creator, we have a few tips to make that dream a reality. At the end of the day, the money is just a bonus.
What Is the TikTok Creator Fund?
The first thing you need to know about the process of making money on TikTok is the TikTok Creator Fund. The TikTok app would be nothing without its creators — this fund is the company’s way of honoring and rewarding that crucial relationship by giving back to them in a way that keeps everyone motivated to continue making new, fresh content.
However, you can’t just start making money as soon as you download the app and upload a video. To use your content as a side gig (or even potentially your main gig), there are certain eligibility requirements you have to meet. Once you hit that threshold, you can apply for the TikTok Creator Fund through the app.
Here are the guidelines:
- You must be at least 18 years old (and have identification to prove it).
- Be a legal resident of one of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, or any of the US territories or possessions (note: the creator fund is also available in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain)
- Have at least 10,000 authentic TikTok followers (no bots allowed)
- Have had at least 100,000 authentic video views over the previous 30 days
- Follow their community guidelines
- Post original videos (“stitches,” live streams, and reposts don’t count)
Once you’ve met all of those eligibility requirements, just go into your account settings and click creator tools. From there, you’ll head into “TikTok Creator Fund,” where you can apply — then just sit back, scroll your FYP, and wait to be accepted so you start making content to help you rake in that cash.
How Does TikTok Revenue Work?
The TikTok Creator Fund isn’t a one-size-fits-all payment scale, though — it’s not as simple as just uploading a video and watching the cash roll in. There are a few different factors that go into calculating how much people will get from making and posting their original content.
For example, only new content will qualify toward how much money you can make. Any views you had before you were accepted into the Creator Fund won’t be taken into consideration for monetary compensation.
The number of views you get and how people engage with your content is also a crucial part of making money on TikTok — as long as your videos follow their Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, that is.
Tips for Making Money on TikTok
There are plenty of ways to use TikTok to create new streams of revenue. The videos that you make, how you make them, and the opportunities that you can find are all under your control.
Once you know how to make money on TikTok, you have the ability to take control of your revenue, as well. Here are a few tips for making the most of the opportunity.
Create Quality Content
The first step in using TikTok as a source of revenue isn’t just about creating content — it’s about making quality content. After all, the more views and engagement a video has, the more money it will make (and continue to make) for you.
Spending time on your content may mean you’re not churning TikTok videos out as fast as you’d like, but it also helps increase the odds that your content will gain traction — and potentially even go viral!
Start by taking a look through your feed to see if you can identify the current TikTok trends. Using the hottest song or participating in a challenge can put your videos on more people’s FYPs.
Even just incorporating popular hashtags in your description can make a difference in whether or not you’re featured on another active user’s algorithm (and no, it doesn’t have to make sense). It’s all about visibility — once you can get people to view your videos, you can get them hooked on your unique point of view.
The actual content you create makes a difference too. You may have lots to say, but keeping your videos short and sweet is always going to be more successful than longer videos — most TikTok users won’t stick around for three minutes of content, no matter how good it is.
If you’re a gamer (gaming content is incredibly popular on social media), investing in a clipping software like Powder PC is an excellent way to take the guesswork out of the editing process.
When you play one of the many games our PC-based software supports, our AI automatically finds and “clips” all of your greatest hits so that you don’t have to — you just get to play the game! You can easily upload this montage to TikTok and show off your skills without having to edit it yourself. That way, you can keep your content fresh without sacrificing precious game time.
Consider Branded Content
Another way to make money on TikTok is by creating branded content. Branded content is produced while partnering with a business or service, so it’s like half creativity and half marketing.
While you won’t necessarily make any extra money from the content itself, it will give you the ability to earn additional revenue or even goods and services from the brands you decide to partner with. If you find the right partnership, you may even be able to become a brand ambassador for that company.
It’s excellent motivation to find brands whose products you actually enjoy using and reach out to work with them. Sponsored content and affiliate marketing are great money-making tools, and longer-term collaborations can even lead to partnering with these companies for brand deals and creating your own products (like merch!).
Once you have your own merch, you can launch an eCommerce store with Shopify and even open up your own TikTok shop. Even if your videos are still gaining traction, your shop can start pulling in some additional income.
Now Introducing Series
TikTok has also introduced a new monetization tool available to their content creators — Series. In addition to the Creator Fund, Series allows you to make money from your content by charging a set price for anything you decide is “premium” informative content (like tutorials, faqs, etc.). You’ll create videos, price them, and promote them within the app, giving you an additional way to share your knowledge with the community while also getting paid for it.
To qualify for Series, you have to meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Have an established TikTok account of at least 30 days.
- Have a public Personal Account. Business, political and private accounts are ineligible.
- Make at least three public posts and reach over 1,000 views over the last 30 days.
- Post your original content.
- May need to provide sample videos showcasing any content you sell on other platforms.
- Continue to stay in good standing with TikTok’s community guidelines.
Any content you include on the Series part of the TikTok platform can be up to 20 minutes in length (although it doesn’t have to be). You can post up to 80 unique videos, as well as a free introductory video to get people interested in your content.
What you price your videos at is up to you — many people choose to settle anywhere from $0.99 to $189.99 (with an average of around $9). Every Series video will also go through “Safety” and “Music” reviews before it becomes purchasable.
Creating Series content isn’t much different than creating any other TikTok content. You’ll want to pay attention to any hot trends, use sound appropriately, and edit your videos so that they’re eye-catching but not overly long or wordy.
Linking them to your regular TikTok content can also help promote your account; you can do this by adding a link to your non-paid content.
Link To Your Other Content!
TikTok is an excellent side hustle, but if you’re looking to make some real money, you have to diversify. Depending on the number of followers you have, the short-form videos that make up the TikTok platform are also an excellent way to drive traffic to your other sites.
If you can find ways to create engaging content for your target audience, you can also promote your YouTube, Twitch, Patreon, etc. TikTok influencer marketing isn’t that different from owning a small business — only the merchandise is your sparkling personality.
Don’t have other sites to feature your content on? Why not? Now is the time to start — many of them also allow you to monetize your videos so that you can have multiple ways to make money while doing what you love.
It’s also important to keep tabs on your engagement rate. This way, you can keep track of what content performs well and what content doesn’t.
You can also invest in a bit of SEO (search engine optimization) to help make sure that your social media secures the top spots in related Google searches.
How Soon Can I Get My Funds?
It should take around three days for the funds you’ve earned from your content to appear on your Creator Fund Dashboard. You can keep accruing them or cash out as soon as you hit 30 days after the end of the month the content was created and have at least $10 to transfer.
TikTok can transfer your funds into either your Paypal account or Zelle. Be aware that both of these payment platforms require that you sign up and link your bank account beforehand (a process that often takes at least a few business days), so don’t expect to get your money right away. If you’re even considering monetizing your TikTok videos, go ahead and create an account on at least one of these platforms now.
The Bottom Line
Learning how to make money on TikTok isn’t nearly as difficult as you may think. With enough hard work and dedication, along with the knowledge of how to turn something you love into something that makes you some pocket change, you can change your entire life.
Why work for someone else when you can get paid to enjoy yourself? Powder PC makes that even easier by clipping your best wins, boss battles, and victories and creating a simple-to-upload montage that will impress both your biggest fans and your new viewers.
